Joining a plant society
has many benefits. For one, you become part of a group that has at least one
thing in common with you. If you join the Hosta Society for instance, you can
always strike up a conversation by walking up to someone and asking, "What
do you think about ‘Great Expectations?" Since the other person is a
hostaphile too, he or she will definitely have an opinion to express.
Plant societies
generally distribute information to their members. This may be a fancy,
magazine type publication or a two page newsletter. Either way, it is a source
of "inside" information that might be hard to find in general
gardening magazines or books. Of course, you will also find yourself dealing
with some people who know the names of all 4,000 bearded iris cultivars and the
breeder who introduced each to the trade. Most people, however, will be like
you. They are just people who want to learn more about a plant and have more
fun gardening.
Finally, plant societies
may lead you to new sources for your favorite plants. Specialty nurseries often
advertise in the society newsletter and are also members. They will have new
and unique varieties that you won’t find elsewhere. Also, since many of them
are hobbyists too, they often sell larger divisions and give better value for
the dollar.
